I can hardly believe we have only eight months to go until the launch of the new Blue Route Mall in March 2012 - I guess the old adage is true, time really does fly when you're having fun and especially so if you have something new and exciting to look forward to !

Many of my friends and family keep asking me what will be different and fresh about the new Mall. Each time I answer, I realize that I keep adding new points of interest - as there are so many different and unique qualities about the new Mall. Well, it's brand new - for starters. So it got me thinking that for this column, I had to share these characteristics with you, as a valued shopper of our Blue Route Mall.

What will the new blue route mall have to offer?

Upon completion of the development, the Mall will allow for an appealing and a more consumer-relevant shopping centre, attracting not only our loyal Blue Route Mall shoppers, but also those who reside further afield. The new Mall will have grown from its current size of 48,000m² to 56,000m².

Shoppers will enjoy larger outlets for the major chain stores, a dedicated food court, as well as upmarket coffee shops and restaurants throughout the centre. In addition to this shoppers can look forward to modern ablutions and other customer friendly facilities.
  • 33,000m³ of reinforced concrete will be utilised during the redevelopment project
  • 118,000m² of formwork will be utilised
  • 2.6 million bricks will be used
  • 55,000m² of plaster will be used
  • 60,000m² of screeds will be used
  • 4,000 tonnes of steel will be utilised
  • There is almost 100km of conduit of different sizes for this project
  • Approximately 10kms of cable ladder of different sizes will be incorporated into the project
  • 16,280m² of scaffolding will be used
  • 20,750m² will be demolished
  • Bulk excavations will total 75,000m³
  • Concrete foundation piles equate to 1,500no
  • During peak manpower 1,000 workers will be employed on site
  • Approximately 50 specialist sub-contractors will be employed for the project
  • An approximate of 2 million man-hours will be tallied for this project

Redevelopment Team

The plans to redevelop Blue Route Mall had been in the pipeline for a number of months. The official development team appointed for the R780-million project was announced by Fountainhead Property Trust in early May 2010.

Project Management company, BFH de Jager, heads up the project along with a team consisting of 12 organisations. The professional team, who is set to complete the project in March 2012, includes:

  2. What exactly is being built?
    1. We're rebuilding the entire Mall. It's far more than just a renovation or a face-lift – we're building a new Mall from ground up
  3. How long will the construction take before the Mall is ready?
    1. The project commenced April 2010 and will be complete in 2012
  4. Will I be able to shop at the Mall during the building process?
    1. Absolutely, the construction is broken into various phases. You will be able to shop at the areas that are unaffected. We're aiming to make your visits to Blue Route Mall as convenient as possible
  5. How many phases will there be over the thirty-month redevelopment period?
    1. There are four phases. Through our various communications channels, we will keep you up to date about how the Mall is progressing so that you can be well aware of the redevelopment stages throughout the process.
  6. What is happening in the first phase?
    1. The first phase, which commenced in April 2010 and will run through October 2010, will entail the demolition of :
      • the upper and lower parking deck
      • The upper level shopping area which affects tenants such as Ackermans, Jet, Incredible Connection, Homemark, Flight Centre, Shoe Connection, Home Depot, Coricraft, ABSA, FNB as well as Vodacom
      • Boardmans adjacent to Blue Route Mall
    2. Thereafter, we start building our brand new Blue Route Mall which we aim to complete by 2012. However, we are accommodating most of our tenants in the temporary buildings outside Entrance 2. These tenants include Incredible Connection, FNB, Vodacom and Ackermans
